As a child I was always interested in hair. At every opportunity I would be playing and styling my hair. Whenever I could, I would stand up on the sofa to do my Nans hair. Thirty bunches later and she would look like a 90’s girl band member in love with life. She was so patient with me! During school I used to do my own hair and as I think back, it was never the most elegant style at times and it didn’t always last until the end of the day, but I still loved it!
After leaving school I was at a crossroad deciding what my next steps were going to be. I thought about many options but I kept coming back to the hair industry and the feeling of those early days enjoying all things hair. I remember my first day of training, that feeling of excitement that I was actually doing this. That feeling has never left me.
During my study I had a placement period, and that’s when things really took off for me. As I completed my Level 2 & 3 Hairdressing course at City College Plymouth, I took a placement period at The Boutik salon in Plymouth.
Every Thursday I joined the team at the salon and was able to experience what salon life was truly like, including supporting the hair team with clients. This gave me some great insight and allowed me to better experience the standards and quality I needed to aspire towards. As I entered the final stages of my course and completed my placement, the COVID period hit. I had to quickly move through the final steps of my training so I could qualify before a potential lockdown arrived. Sadly it did, but luckily I had completed my training.
The first lockdown passed and it was during this period, having completed my college training, I was approached by The Boutik salon about joining the hair team. This was it, I was ready to enter the real world of hairdressing! But the truth was I wasn’t quite ready. COVID had cut my training short, and I lacked the experience needed to walk straight onto the shop floor to serve customers. The Boutik salon offered me the opportunity to take an apprenticeship to expand on my training, grow my confidence and give me daily experience in the salon to apply all my skills.
After becoming an apprentice I was able to really focus on the areas that had initial challenged me during my college course, whilst also helping me to advance the skills I had already learnt. I’ve been able to push harder and I’m achieving a far higher standard of work. My knowledge has increased and the confidence I have in myself allows me to maintain a calmness at all times, even when dealing with problems.
As my apprenticeship comes to an end and I pass off my final few assessments, I’m really looking forward to being part of the hair team as a junior hair stylist. It’s been amazing meeting all the lovely customers at The Boutik salon over the past year, and I cannot wait to hopefully serve some of you in the future as your hairstylist.
I am now available throughout the week for a range of hair treatments and services. Having my own column as a stylist is very exciting! I’m very focused on giving you the best customer experience, whilst continuing my professional development as a stylist. I’ve also developed a strong passion for hair-ups, wedding and event hair and I’m always on the lookout for models to practice on. I promise though you won’t be leaving with a 90’s style like my poor nan.
See you all very soon x
